TCS has declared a ₹12 per share second interim dividend for FY27 alongside its September-quarter results on 8 October. The record date is Wednesday, 14 October 2026, and the money will be paid on 30 October.

The question most shareholders are asking is simple: when is the last day to buy TCS shares and still get the dividend? Under India’s T+1 settlement, the answer is Tuesday, 13 October. Below are the exact dates, how much you’ll receive on your holding, how it’s taxed, and whether buying just for the dividend makes sense.

Why you must buy by 13 October, not 14 October

The record date is the day TCS checks its register of shareholders. Only people whose names are on it get the dividend. With T+1 settlement, shares you buy reach your demat account one trading day later. So:

  • Buy on Tuesday, 13 October: shares are credited on Wednesday, 14 October, the record date. You get the dividend.
  • Buy on Wednesday, 14 October: shares are credited on Thursday, 15 October, after the record date. You don’t.

Under T+1, the ex-dividend date falls on the record date itself. That means TCS shares start trading without the dividend entitlement from Wednesday’s open. If you already hold TCS shares, you don’t need to do anything. Selling on or after 14 October doesn’t take the dividend away from you either.

How much you’ll get: dividend on your holding

At ₹12 per share, here’s what lands in your bank account on 30 October before tax, and what you keep after tax at common slab rates. Figures exclude surcharge and cess.

Shares heldDividend (gross)After tax at 20% slabAfter tax at 30% slab
10₹120₹96₹84
50₹600₹480₹420
100₹1,200₹960₹840
500₹6,000₹4,800₹4,200
1,000₹12,000₹9,600₹8,400

At Friday’s closing price of ₹2,156, this ₹12 dividend is a yield of about 0.56%. Add the ₹12 TCS paid in July and FY27’s interim dividends so far total ₹24 per share, about 1.1% of the current price.

How the TCS dividend is taxed

  • Dividends are taxed at your income tax slab rate. They’re added to your income for the year.
  • TDS of 10% applies if your total dividend from TCS in the financial year crosses ₹10,000. That counts both interim dividends: at ₹24 a share so far in FY27, it kicks in at roughly 417 shares or more. Without a PAN on record, TDS is 20%.
  • If your total income is below the taxable limit, you can submit the declaration form (Form 121 under the new Income-tax Act, which replaced Forms 15G/15H) to TCS’s registrar to avoid TDS.
  • TDS isn’t an extra tax. It’s adjusted against your final liability when you file your return.

Should you buy TCS just to get the dividend?

Usually not. On the ex-dividend date, the share price typically opens lower by roughly the dividend amount, because the company has just paid out that cash. Here’s what “dividend capture” looks like on 100 shares:

StepAmount
Buy 100 shares at ₹2,156₹2,15,600 invested
Dividend received (gross)+₹1,200
Tax on dividend at 30% slab−₹360
Typical price adjustment on ex-date (~₹12 × 100)−₹1,200
Net, before brokerage and other charges−₹360

The dividend roughly washes out against the price drop, and the tax makes it a small loss. Brokerage, STT and other charges make it worse. The price won’t always fall by exactly ₹12, since the market moves for other reasons too, but you shouldn’t count on the dividend as a free gain.

The dividend matters if you already wanted to own TCS for the long term. In that case, buying by Tuesday simply means you collect this payout too.
